The Hurst Hatch roof, commonly referred to as T-Tops, was a feature that was offered for the Trans Am starting in 1976. This feature was part of the Special Edition package option and its RPO code was Y82.
All Hurst Hatch Roofs were designed to be installed after final assembly of the Trans Am. These conversions were performed by Hurst. Because of early production issues the Hurst Hatch Roof was suspended so not all of the 1976 Special Edition Trans Ams received the hatch roof.
Eventually the feature returned and for the 1977 Trans Am you could order the Special Edition option with or without the hatch roof. The RPO code remained Y82 for Special Editions with Hurst Hatch Roofs and Special Editions without Hatch Roofs received the RPO code of Y81.
By the middle of 1978 production General Motors had designed its own version of a hatch roof that was integrated into the construction of the car. GM switched to using this new design by January, 1978 production. The RPO code changed to Y84 for Special Edition cars with the new hatch design which is commonly referred to as Fisher T-Tops. The first Y84 produced at the Van Nuys assembly plant was presented to Burt Reynolds as a thank you gift for the boost in Trans Am sales following the release of Smokey and the Bandit. A few years later Burt sold or gifted this Trans Am to Lamar Jackson who played Sugar Bear in the movie and was a personal friend of Burt Reynolds.
