Carrie's Last Name... Revealed?
We know the last names of every main character in *Smokey and the Bandit - *except Carrie. Her surname doesn't appear in the film credits, the Final Draft screenplay, or even in Smokey and the Bandit II.
But there's a hidden gem if you dig a little deeper.
In the Early Draft Screenplay, dated **July 30, 1976 - **a full month before filming began - several character names are different:
**Early Draft ---> Final Draft **
Bandit LaRue ---> Bandit - Bo Darville
Cledus Snow ---> Snowman - Cledus Snow
Sheriff Buell Clayton ---> Sheriff Buford T Justice
Kyle and Dickie ---> Big and Little Enos Burdett
And in Scene 48, we meet *Kate - *the character we now know as Carrie. And guess what? The draft gives us her full name: Kate McConnell.
If you ever get the chance to read this early draft, I highly recommend it. It even includes a completely different (and unexpected) ending. No spoilers here - but here's a teaser: Junior doesn't exist in this version, and if there's no groom... what exactly drives the Sheriff to chase the Bandit all the way back to Atlanta?
